This one's my favorite NaNo game. I love it. I get so much new music.
I'll post an example:
A scheming mother plots to marry off her heiress daughter to a figure from the girl's past, but loses everything when a freak summer storm rises off the sea and threatens the entirety of South Texas. A shipping magnate with a shady past rediscovers his biggest regret in the form of a young heiress (same girl.) A corrupt official finds himself double-crossed by Nature itself. A young girl discovers that she knows nothing about the tragedy that shaped her life and that she must reach out to the very man she blames for it, or lose everything, and not just her heart.
Ha, I love doing that - it's the same story from four angles. And the soundtrack could go:
Artist suggestions: Enya and Cirque du Soleil worked for it before, with some atmospheric classical (dubstep remixes) and an indie band named Maximalism (Brad Podray, he's on Bandcamp, and the album I used was Soundtrack for a Great Adventure).
Cursum Perficio - Enya The Carnival of the Animals - Camille Saint-Saens Battlefield - Cirque du Soleil Endless Love - Royskopp Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite
Okay, someone else take a stab at it.

Ooooh, I love this game. Just had a thought. How about including criteria such as theme (e.g. love conquers all/it is possible to overcome the horrors of the past/etc.), mood of the story (i.e. love/betrayal/etc.), genre of the story, and preferred musical genre of the requester? I recall seeing those on the NaNo thread. Sometimes it's easier to pull music based on that, because a story can go in so many directions. Hmm. Shall we make sure that anything we recommend is up on youtube, so it's accessible? Oh, another question. Is this one person giving recommendations, or each person just does recommendations for the last post, and then puts up their own synopsis? Anyway, here's my list, based on the example. I'm not sure where this is going -- whether it's a love story, betrayal story, YA, etc., so...er...I'm guessing. :-P (Click on link for youtube.) Njosnavelin by Sigur RosScarborough Fair by Simon and GarfunkelSpies by ColdplayAwakening by Jo BlankenburgBreath by Breaking BenjaminYou're So Vain by Carly SimonNight of the Wolf by Nox Arcana
Storyland is the realm where stories are built, more...or less...to order. It's ruled over by the Muse, Henry, and the Narrator. When a recalcitrant plot bunny causes an emotional crisis at the climax that the muse is powerless to resolve, Henry hurriedly summons an authorial self-insert, Aselan, to go into the story and patch things up. Unfortunately, when Aselan falls in love with the intern muse, Richard, it seems she's there to stay. Not a huge problem, except that she's a manic depressive mass of nerves who warps the fabric of reality wherever she goes, leaving a trail of neurotic frankenbunnies wherever she goes. The only one who can even remotely control Aselan is Richard, and his grip is hanging by a thread. Henry would simply LOVE to get rid of the self-insert, and restore the balance. Unfortunately, not everyone sees it her way. Aselan can create just as well as she can destroy, and there are those who love the benefit of her powers *coughcoughhealthplan* -- nor is Richard keen to lose his girlfriend. Unfortunately, all hope seems lost when Aselan accidentally creates a giant plot hole that threatens to engulf Storyland, and her manic depression threatens to drive a rift between herself and Richard. Can Henry and the Narrator restore Storyland to normal functioning, before Aselan's creations destroy everything? Can Aselan and Richard find happiness? How can balance ever be achieved, when gods and mortals walk the same plane?
Mood: Upbeat adventure to dark/tense/fearful to uplifting/sadder but wiser. Theme: Love (and logic) conquers all. Genre preferences: I listen to metal and epic music, but it doesn't have to be those, necessarily. Surprise me. :-)

Hoo, epic and metal? I have very little of either, unless by "epic" you mean "music like Wagner." Wagner I HAVE. And I would suggest it, but if you meant Wagner you have him too! Which means you would have Rossini (the "William Tell" overture) and Tchaikovsky ('1812 Overture') and Mussorgsky ("Night on Bald Mountain") and there's always "the other Saint-Saens" (Danse Macabre.) Hey. they're classics for a reason.
I went to ask Spouse, he's more metal than me. I admit to owning Snow Patrol albums. He said to ask if you like Savatage, because their album "Dead Winter Dead" sounds like it could cover parts of your story, and I remember their song "Edge of Thorns" from an old metal-head boyfriend...(Best darn thing to come out of that relationship!) For doomed relationships, which Richard and Aselan's sounds like, I would pick Muse. I know, they aren't metal! (I like them anyhow) but they have a grip on the urgency of the plot ("Time is Running Out") the poignancy of love that can't continue/shouldn't exist ("Starlight") the internal tide versus the complete dominion of the Muse and Henry ("Uprising") - and "Knights of Cydonia" almost contains the same line you ended with, about gods and mortals (except the gods appear to be getting the short end of the stick.)
On a more eclectic end, the Disney tune "Friends on the Other Side" (Princess and the Frog) may work well (it depends on the gimmick!) for Henry and the Muse (they have the ability to summon "otherworldly" help, after all - so did the voodoo guy.) The movie's love song (Never Knew I Needed) was pretty appropriate for sadder-but-wiser and love conquers all (even logic, sometimes.) The movie had the same theme, but it's a popular one for Disney flicks if you think about it. If you don't *hate* pop, a song like Snow Patrol's "Run" is evocative, but if you hate pop, you won't like that at all. I like an odd band named Epica that most people don't mind (they sound like Kamelot, or a bit like Evanescence, but not so whiny, thank something) and they have a few songs that could mirror pieces of plot/characters: "Feint" comes to mind, and I think one of their deeper tracks, "Blank Infinity" is very apt for your book. Maybe you'll like it - it was hard to think so far out of my own library! An indie band I find weirdly apt and useful for sorrow and pensive writing is the instrumental band Explosions in the Sky. I think their whole discography (and Maximalism's) is available free on Bandcamp. I've had them several years and I think I got them there.

My theme is "nothing loved ever truly dies." It's echoed in the island's seeming rebirth, the lover's reunion, and the murdered father (who lives on through a surprising inheritance that the mother seeks to control until the storm unravels her plans and forces a confrontation.) I have subthemes, mostly touching on forgiveness and what survives in humanity when it is threatened on a massive scale - I guess it would be "nobility of human spirit." I keep running into a brick wall thinking it's a romance.

mimOh goodness, I...didn't expect that! I just threw a couple of my genres out there, but really, I'll listen to anything -- I like expanding out of my own library. Thanks, though! It looks like you've put a lot of thought into this. Looking forward to an extended Youtube session! Actually, I've never listened to Savatage, so I'll be sure to check them out. By epic, I guess I meant anything inspired by classical music/movie soundtracks/etc., so classical works. :-) Oooh, I do indeed like Muse as well as Disney music. All those songs are excellent! ^_^ Heh, you actually nailed it on Epica -- I absolutely love Kamelot and Epica. And...well...the song "Blank Infinity" is exactly where I stole the title from. XD Anyway, thanks again for the playlist! I'll be sure to check out. :-)
Okay, now that I have a better grasp of where your story is going -- I'd have to add a few items to that list, because they all make me think of triumph/ adversity/love/trust/faith in humanity/people changing. Don't worry, none of it is metal. :-) *looks at list* Okay, this has got to be the oddest playlist I ever made. I hope some of this helps you! Don't Stop Believing by Journey Let It Be and Hey Jude by The Beatles Kristy, Are You Doing Okay? By The Offspring Invincible by Pat Benatar Right Here by Staind It's My Life by Bon Jovi Weather Systems [Album] by Anathema -- sad and sweet, I think Dare You to Move, Meant to Live, and Stars by Switchfoot (as well as Sigur Ros and Nox Arcana's Night of the Wolf from the previous list. Sigur Ros is sort of soft, ambient/atmospheric instrumental music. There are some words, but they're in Icelandic. XD Nox Arcana is instrumental.) (I don't know, if you keep thinking it's a romance...maybe it is a romance? Or has a romantic subplot?)
