(click for big version) The steps1. This is the greatest idea I've EVER had! 2. Okay, it's harder than I thought, but still good 3. This is going to take some work 4. This sucks. And it's boring 5. Dark night of the soul 6. It will be good to finish it because I will learn for the next novel 7. Hey, I can at least finish this sucker in just another 10,000 words 8. It's done and it sucks but not as bad as I thought What this meansThere is a way forward. If you make it through the depths of writerly despair you begin to find things to push you forward again. You ARE learning things that will help you with the next novel. Every word you add is bringing you closer to the point where you realise you only have 10k to go. Just to repeat the important point I've been trying to make in these September pep talks: KEEP GOING! IT'S WORTH IT!

I'm somewhere between 4 & 5 with my novel, and 6 & 7 for the novella series. Fabulous graphic! LOL
(ps - love the goat, too!)
Edit to add - can I share the graph?

Incredible. Insane as it may seem, all the seemingly pointless and meandering drivel I wrote over the past three years actually maps to those steps. It just happened so slowly that I never picked up on it. Actually, it seems like I'm going at a rate of approximately one step for every six months...normalized for hiatuses. Hiatii? Hiatussussurusses. Hiatosaurs. Because when silence falls, insert dinosaurs. It worked for Doctor Who.
I can't believe I just did that. Ahem. Anyway.
So I think I might just be on the transition point between 5 and 6. According to the projection, if I keep going at this rate, I will finish the first draft of Dark Arcana (such as it is)...within 1.5 to 2 years.
I wonder if it'll actually work that way!
