This week I finished a story I'd been working on since the beginning of June and said a temporary goodbye to a character I've known since the start of April 2011. I have a picture of him that makes me go all teary-eyed and I'm trying to throw myself into a new project so I can get some emotional distance before I think about rewriting and/or editing anything that mentions my beloved Toby. This is of course the ideal state to be in when it comes to trying to write a pep talk.
First of all, congratulations! You've made it all the way through week one! Give yourself a pat on the back, a snack or a drink and then come back and read the rest of this.
Now I need to reassure you about something: what you've written doesn't have to be bookshelf-ready awesomeness. It's a first draft. It has weird, random things you wrote when you were half asleep. It might have spelling and grammar mistakes, plot holes, contradictions, massive changes to characters and storylines, maybe even a shift from one main character to a completely different one. All of that is fine.
Okay? No matter how much of a mess it seems to be, it's fine. Just keep writing, because you'll never be able to fix a story you haven't written.
So, have fun. Make mistakes. Write random AUs of your own characters. Then watch this video:
Now, go and write some more! You can do it!
(If anyone else is feeling peppy, by all means contribute to this thread. I don't have a monopoly on pep... which is probably just as well.)
